The word “Parafernalia” describes a ritual through the tools that enable it: a broad term used to refer to a particular concept, giving context to a group of seemingly disparate objects.
The studio focuses on materials and the ways in which they are used as tools for the (re)contextualization of ideas through a rational approach. This process results in a diverse range of objects whose materiality and properties inform both their design and the hands involved in their creation.
Driven by a shared interest in exploring and analyzing cultural contexts, Sebastián Zorrilla and Genki Matsumura founded Parafernalia in 2021. Working as a design studio, Parafernalia develops material narratives that offer critical perspectives, executed with intention and awareness.
